For\u00a0Alejandro “Alex” de Castro<\/strong>, the 21-year-old golfer from Barcelona, competing in\u00a0The 154th Open Championship<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0Royal Birkdale<\/strong>\u00a0was far more than making his debut in a major championship. It confirmed that his name already belongs among the new generation of Spanish amateur golfers with genuine international potential.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Barcelona Golf Academy<\/strong>\u00a0graduate, who is also a member of the\u00a0Long Beach State University<\/strong>\u00a0golf team in California, returns from England with unforgettable memories: two solid rounds of\u00a073-73<\/strong>\u00a0for a\u00a0146 (+6)<\/strong>\u00a0total, finishing tied as the\u00a0sixth-best amateur<\/strong>\u00a0in the championship while enjoying, from the inside, an experience reserved for the world’s finest golfers.<\/p>\n But to understand the true significance of this adventure, we need to go back a few weeks.<\/p>\n The surprise at Burnham & Berrow<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Alex’s Open journey truly began on\u00a02 July<\/strong>, at Final Qualifying held at\u00a0Burnham & Berrow Golf Club<\/strong>.<\/p>\n With a superb performance of\u00a0eight-under-par<\/strong>, finishing tied third, the young member of\u00a0Club de Golf Barcelona<\/strong>\u2014the same club where\u00a0David Puig<\/strong>\u00a0developed his game\u2014secured one of the five coveted places available for the oldest and most prestigious championship in world golf.<\/p>\n It was the reward for years of hard work and the passport to fulfil the dream every golfer has chased since childhood: playing in\u00a0The Open Championship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Qualifying represented one of the greatest achievements of his career. Not only did it earn him a place at Royal Birkdale, it also lifted him eight places in the\u00a0World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR)<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0No. 52<\/strong>, confirming the remarkable progress he has made throughout the season.<\/p>\n The credentials were already there. In 2024 he captured the prestigious\u00a0Copa Nacional Puerta de Hierro<\/strong>. This spring he claimed his first collegiate victory at the\u00a0Wildcat Invitational<\/strong>, was named\u00a0Big West Golfer of the Year<\/strong>, and received recognition through several\u00a0All-American<\/strong>\u00a0selections.<\/p>\n The official\u00a0The Open<\/strong>\u00a0website also highlighted his achievements ahead of the championship, describing him as one of only three amateurs to successfully progress through the demanding Final Qualifying.<\/p>\n The road to Royal Birkdale<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n A few days later, Alex arrived on England’s north-west coast accompanied by two very special people.<\/p>\n By his side was\u00a0Carlos Vivas<\/strong>, Head Coach of the\u00a0Barcelona Golf Academy<\/strong>\u00a0and one of the key figures behind his development over recent years.<\/p>\n For Carlos Vivas, this was no ordinary week either. It marked the\u00a0second time<\/strong>\u00a0he had accompanied one of his players to\u00a0The Open Championship<\/strong>. The first came back in\u00a02017<\/strong>, also at\u00a0Royal Birkdale<\/strong>, when he worked alongside Australian golfer\u00a0Ryan McCarthy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Nine years later, fate had brought him back to the historic links, this time alongside Alejandro de Castro\u2014a remarkable coincidence that underlines both the international reach achieved by the\u00a0Barcelona Golf Academy<\/strong>\u00a0and the outstanding work carried out by its coaching staff over the years.<\/p>\n Completing the team was\u00a0Bruno Mart\u00ed<\/strong>, one of Alex’s training partners at the academy, who would spend the entire week carrying the bag as caddie in what proved to be an equally unexpected and unforgettable experience for both of them.<\/p>\n The three of them arrived determined to savour every moment of a unique opportunity.<\/p>\n An odyssey before it even began<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n As if The Open wanted to test the debutant from day one, the first setback soon arrived.<\/p>\n Alex’s golf bag failed to reach England on time.<\/p>\n Throughout the practice days he had to make do with a borrowed set of clubs and even adapt to using a different putter from his own\u2014far from an ideal situation when preparing for a major championship.<\/p>\n It was the sort of inconvenience that could easily have unsettled many players, yet Alex simply turned it into another anecdote from an unforgettable week.<\/p>\n Remaining calm throughout, he accepted the situation naturally and continued preparing for the championship alongside Carlos Vivas, displaying a level of maturity well beyond his 21 years.<\/p>\n Tuesday among the stars<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n One of the moments Alex will never forget came on\u00a0Tuesday<\/strong>, during the championship practice sessions.<\/p>\n On the\u00a0Royal Birkdale driving range<\/strong>, the left-hander from Spain found himself practising alongside some of the biggest names in world golf. Just a few metres away, he was hitting drives next to\u00a0Tommy Fleetwood<\/strong>,\u00a0Tyrrell Hatton<\/strong>,\u00a0Xander Schauffele<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Josele Ballester<\/strong>, soaking up an atmosphere that can only be experienced at\u00a0The Open<\/strong>.<\/p>\n It was an image that perfectly captured the scale of the experience.<\/p>\n Only a few weeks earlier, they had been players he admired on television. Now they were warming up right beside him.<\/p>\n Living The Open from the inside<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n As the days went by, Alex began to discover everything that surrounds\u00a0The Open Championship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Throughout the practice days he also crossed paths with\u00a0Keegan Bradley<\/strong>,\u00a0Joaqu\u00edn Niemann<\/strong>,\u00a0David Puig<\/strong>\u00a0and once again\u00a0Josele Ballester<\/strong>, sharing the practice facilities, fairways and training areas with some of the world’s finest golfers.<\/p>\n There were also moments to treasure beyond the golf itself.<\/p>\n One of the most memorable came when\u00a0Luke Donald<\/strong>, Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain, happily posed for a selfie with Alex’s brothers, who had travelled to Royal Birkdale to support him throughout such a special week.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Carlos Vivas continued fine-tuning every technical detail, helping his player understand the subtleties of a\u00a0links course<\/strong>\u00a0as demanding as it was unpredictable.<\/p>\n The first shot of a dream<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Thursday finally arrived.<\/p>\n After years of development, success in national amateur competitions, his collegiate journey in the United States and that unforgettable qualification at Burnham & Berrow,\u00a0Alejandro de Castro<\/strong>\u00a0was about to tee it up in his\u00a0first major championship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n His opening round was scheduled for\u00a011:15 a.m.<\/strong>, alongside\u00a0South Korea’s Jeongwoo Ham<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Japan’s Ryutaro Nagano<\/strong>, two young players who, like Alex, were hoping to leave their mark at Royal Birkdale.<\/p>\n The nerves were inevitable.<\/p>\n Alex later admitted that when he reached the\u00a01st tee<\/strong>, he\u00a0“couldn’t feel either my hands or my feet,”<\/strong>\u00a0to the point where he had to rely on breathing exercises to settle himself before striking his opening shot.<\/p>\n But once the round got underway, everything changed.<\/p>\n After that first swing, the nerves disappeared, and he simply returned to doing what he had spent a lifetime practising: playing golf.<\/p>\n Every hole became another lesson. The galleries, the organisation, the immaculate condition of the course, the ever-changing wind and the unique atmosphere of\u00a0The Open<\/strong>\u00a0combined to make it an unforgettable day.<\/p>\n Friday: to make the cut, or not to make the cut \u2013 that was the question<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Friday dawned with an even greater challenge.<\/p>\n Making the cut.<\/strong><\/p>\n Alex began the second round at\u00a0three-over-par<\/strong>, knowing he would need an outstanding performance to reach a projected cut line hovering around\u00a0level par<\/strong>\u00a0for much of the day.<\/p>\n The task was enormous.<\/p>\n To make matters even tougher, he was drawn in the\u00a0final group of the day<\/strong>, teeing off at\u00a04:21 p.m.<\/strong>, when the wind had begun to strengthen once again, making the closing hours at Royal Birkdale even more demanding.<\/p>\n Yet he never stopped fighting.<\/p>\n By the end of the day, he had signed for a second consecutive\u00a073<\/strong>, matching his opening round and completing an exceptionally composed championship for a major debutant.<\/p>\n The cut ultimately proved just out of reach.<\/p>\n But the experience\u2014and everything he learned from it\u2014was priceless.<\/p>\n Much more than just a result<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n The record books will show that\u00a0Alejandro de Castro<\/strong>\u00a0finished\u00a0The 154th Open Championship<\/strong>\u00a0with a total of\u00a0146 (+6)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Yet those numbers barely reflect everything he experienced during an extraordinary week.<\/p>\n In the space of just fifteen days, he had gone from earning one of the coveted places at Final Qualifying to competing in the oldest and most prestigious championship in golf.<\/p>\n He practised and shared memorable moments alongside some of the biggest names in the game, including\u00a0Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Xander Schauffele, Keegan Bradley, Joaqu\u00edn Niemann, David Puig<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Josele Ballester<\/strong>.<\/p>\n He experienced the nerves of standing on the\u00a01st tee<\/strong>\u00a0of a major championship for the very first time\u2014and learned how to overcome them.<\/p>\n And, perhaps most importantly, he returned home having finished\u00a0tied as the sixth-lowest amateur in the entire Open Championship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Supported throughout the week by\u00a0Carlos Vivas<\/strong>, with\u00a0Bruno Mart\u00ed<\/strong>\u00a0carrying the bag, Alex proudly represented both the\u00a0Barcelona Golf Academy<\/strong>\u00a0and Spanish golf on one of the sport’s greatest stages.<\/p>\n His Open debut also ended with a statistic that speaks for itself:\u00a0tied for sixth place in the Amateur Classification<\/strong>, an outstanding achievement and an excellent introduction to golf’s highest level.<\/p>\n The beginning of a new chapter<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Beyond the final result, Alex’s performance produced several highly encouraging statistics.<\/p>\n On one of the world’s most demanding\u00a0links courses<\/strong>, he finished\u00a066th in Driving Distance<\/strong>, averaging\u00a0310.3 yards <\/strong>off the tee.
