Over the past few decades, several motor companies have explored the development or commercialisation of premium golf equipment, usually as a brand extension aimed at an audience that shares values such as precision, engineering and high performance.

Williams: F1 engineering applied to golf

One of the clearest attempts was that of the British team Williams F1 Team, which a few years ago promoted the Williams Golf brand with a complete range of drivers, woods, hybrids, irons and putters. The proposal relied on the technological narrative of the Formula 1 team, applying concepts of aerodynamics and advanced materials to the design of clubs. The project generated notable initial expectation within the sector, although its presence in the market eventually proved relatively limited.

Mercedes-AMG: golf as a premium brand extension

Another example was Mercedes-AMG, which launched a collection of golf clubs inspired by its sporting identity and the engineering associated with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. Drivers, irons and wedges with a technological aesthetic sought to transfer to the golf course the universe of high performance that characterises the German brand.

Red Bull Racing: strong collaborations

In the most recent case of Oracle Red Bull Racing, the approach to golf has mainly come through collaborations with manufacturers in the sector, such as TaylorMade Golf. These initiatives have resulted in limited editions of equipment and accessories inspired by the Formula 1 team, more oriented towards marketing and lifestyle than towards the development of a proprietary line of clubs.

Lamborghini: exclusivity and design

It is worth recalling that the Italian brand Lamborghini has explored the golf territory through premium sets and accessories, many years ago as its own brand, and in recent years in collaboration with specialised manufacturers such as Honma. In its case, the focus was clearly oriented towards luxury and design, transferring the aggressive and exclusive aesthetics of its supercars to products aimed at a very select audience.

Porsche: the sporting lifestyle approach

Something similar happens with Porsche, which through its Porsche Design division launched different collections of golf products, including bags, accessories and even some clubs in special editions. In this case, golf is presented as part of the lifestyle associated with the brand, rather than as an industrial commitment within the equipment market.

Ferrari: luxury and high-end merchandising

For its part, Ferrari has flirted with golf through exclusive sets and high-end accessories that bring the visual identity of the Italian manufacturer to the course, with the Cobra Golf driver being one of the most remembered pieces. As with other luxury car brands, the objective was to reinforce brand image and offer distinctive products to its followers and customers.

McLaren: the new player in the field

Now it is McLaren’s turn, which has announced the launch of McLaren Golf, a project that promises to transfer its engineering and performance DNA – shared between McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive – to golf equipment. With the incorporation of prestigious executives from the industry, such as Neil Howie, the initiative aims to establish new standards in precision and design.

Brand image or a new business?

Put into perspective, the presence of motor brands in golf tends to respond, in our opinion, more to strategies of brand image and positioning than to the will to build a major business within the industry around equipment. Golf shares with motorsport values such as technology, performance, precision and exclusivity, which makes it a natural territory for extending brand identity.

However, competing in the golf club market – dominated by specialised and strongly established manufacturers with decades of experience in R&D – does not seem easy. For this reason, many of these initiatives have had a limited lifespan or have remained in the territory of premium products, special series or limited editions.

The question now is whether McLaren Golf will manage to take its project one step further or whether it will follow the same path as other incursions from the world of motorsport into golf: interesting projects from a brand point of view, but with a more symbolic and attention-grabbing role than one of structural integration within the golf industry.

April 24, 2026 – The recent announcement of the launch of McLaren Golf by McLaren, officially on 29 April, once again brings to the table an idea that has appeared several times over time in the industry over the years: the interest of automotive brands – especially those linked to Formula 1 and the world of […]

[164
post-175193","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-opinion-en
["GET
