The Saló del Tinell in Barcelona hosted an emotional concert last Saturday as part of Mediterranean Day 2024, entitled “Music for Life and Dignity: A Tribute to the Mediterranean – Dialogues of Distant Voices”. The event featured Jordi Savall and the Orpheus 21 ensemble, a group formed by migrant and refugee musicians from various Mediterranean countries.

The program included a selection of over 20 musical pieces, including traditional songs, dances, and chants from the historical musical heritage of the Mediterranean.

For more than an hour, the musicians illustrated how music can serve as a bridge connecting different traditions and life experiences, filling the venue with melodies that transcend borders and cultures.

The concert was organized by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), the Union for the Mediterranean, the City Council of Barcelona, the Generalitat of Catalonia, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation. This event was one of the main activities for the Mediterranean Day celebration, an annual occasion that highlights the importance of cultural exchanges and cooperation among the peoples of the region while promoting the diversity and richness of the Mediterranean territory.

To close the event, the duo Athrodeel, composed of Syrian couple Ahmad Dyab and Aseel Massoud, presented a performance blending classical Arab music, Catalan folk music, and Oriental flamenco.

Artist Frederic Amat was responsible for designing this year’s event poster.
