This ensemble, founded just two years ago by maestro Jordi Savall, is an orchestra composed exclusively of young women of various nationalities. The initiative, part of the YOCPA project (Youth Orchestra and Choir Professional Academies), is inspired by the musical activities of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, a charitable institution founded in 1346 that provided shelter and education for orphans, particularly girls, who were given the opportunity to study music from an early age. This school gained great prestige during the 17th and 18th centuries and was home to notable figures such as Antonio Vivaldi, who served there as a director and teacher.
The orchestra is conducted by Savall, while the virtuoso Tatar violinist Alfia Bakieva leads the ensemble.
Through this tour, Jordi Savall and Les Musiciennes du Concert des Nations have reaffirmed their commitment to Baroque music while also honouring and advocating for the role of women in music and culture, both throughout the entire tour and with its finale coinciding with International Women’s Day.
