21/06/2024

Today, 21st June, World Music Day, Jordi Savall presents Claudio Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo at the Opéra Royal de Versailles, with Le Concert des Nations and the choir of the Opéra Royal de Versailles, prepared by Lluís Vilamajó.

L’Orfeo: Favola in musica, with libretto by Alessandro Striggio and music by Claudio Monteverdi – first performed at the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, Italy, on 24th February 1607 – is a fundamental work that demonstrates the power of music to tell stories and express deep emotions. It was one of the first masterpieces of Baroque opera, had a profound influence on the development of Baroque music, and is one of the first works still performed regularly today. The use of period instruments in this performance is a unique opportunity to enjoy its original sound.

Maestro Savall has conducted L’Orfeo on other occasions during his career at such emblematic venues as Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu (1992-1993, 2001-2002), Madrid’s Teatro Real (1999), Paris’s Opéra-Comique (2021) and Versailles (2017). It is currently being staged at the Opéra Royal de Versailles, with performances on 21st, 22nd and 23rd June, and will shortly be presented at the Rencontres Musicales d’Évian (27/06) and the Opéra d’Avignon (November, 2025).

Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo is a work that has enjoyed constant cultural success thanks to its historical importance, musical quality, academic recognition, presence in the permanent repertoire and cultural appreciation. This opera remains a masterpiece in the world of classical music and a reference work for lovers of opera and music history.
