Jordi Savall conducts Semiramis and Don Juan by Gluck at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse

22/10/2024

The Ballet of the Opéra National du Capitole de Toulouse and Le Concert des Nations, under the direction of Jordi Savall, will present the ballets and suites Semiramis and Don Juan by Christoph Willibald Gluck, from October 24 to 30, 2024, at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse.

These two works represent a turning point in the history of opera and dance, and they are the highlight of a program that aims to bring back the spirit of innovation of Gluck in the 18th century. During this period, Europe was experiencing a significant transformation, where artists like Gluck explored new forms of fusion between music and drama. Don Juan and Semiramis are examples of this artistic renaissance, where music was used to enhance the narrative and bring a new theatrical dimension to life.

Under the direction of Jordi Savall and with the participation of choreographers Edward Clug and Ángel Rodríguez,, this production will offer an expanded and dramatized version of these two works, combining orchestral music—with 30 musicians from the Maestro’s ensemble—with ballet. This project, recorded and released in 2022 by the Alia Vox, will also reach the Gran Teatre del Liceu in March 2025, in a coproduction that will once again bring together music, drama, and dance.
