The Gran Teatre del Liceu will host, from March 23rd to 29th, one of the most anticipated productions of the season, with Maestro Jordi Savall leading Le Concert des Nations. The ensemble will perform the music from two of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s most iconic works, Don Juan and Sémiramis, staged by the Ballet du Capitole de Toulouse, with choreography by Edward Clug and Ángel Rodríguez.
For Savall, this co-production, the result of a collaboration between the Théâtre de l’Opéra National du Capitole de Toulouse and the Théâtre National de l’Opéra-Comique in Paris, represents a unique opportunity to explore of Gluck’s modernity and evocative power in a multidisciplinary proposal. In Savall’s own words, “this project was much desired and has come to life thanks to the passion for Gluck’s music, which goes beyond the conventions of its time and continues to surprise with its ability to move.”
The maestro particularly highlights Don Juan, a work that, according to him, “captures the essence of the character with music that combines moments of sensuality and libertinism with a dramatic and spectacular ending.” Savall considers this conclusion to be “one of the most expressive and impactful ever composed.” Regarding Sémiramis, the director emphasizes the “tension and dramatic force” of the work, explored through Ángel Rodríguez’s choreography.
One of the novelties Savall has announced for Barcelona is the inclusion of the orchestral suite from Iphigénie en Aulide as a “musical appetizer,” a piece that incorporates the final orchestral passages of Wagner, influenced by Gluck’s style.
The visual aspect of the production has also been carefully worked on. With 35 dancers on stage, the director of the Ballet du Capitole, Beate Willack, considers it a “true privilege” to present this production at the Liceu and highlights the importance of working with Savall and the choreographers to create a cohesive proposal that transcends the stylistic differences between the two works.
With this project, Jordi Savall and his collaborators aim not only to revive Gluck’s legacy but also to explore the emotional and dramatic depths of his music through movement and dance, offering the audience an unforgettable sensory experience at one of Barcelona’s most prestigious venues.
