Ferran Savall is a self-taught vocalist in search of a natural voice. His main influences are Afro-American music, soul and gospel, but he has also explored world music: from Brazil, Pakistan, India and Africa, among others, always avoiding specialisation in any one style while seeking out new techniques to incorporate into his own voice.
He took his first steps as a singer and performer in the public squares and streets of the Gràcia district of Barcelona and at the bar SiNo –which sadly no longer exists- owned by the Venezuelan writer Armando Luigi Castaneda. In 2004 he began performing professionally with his family, which led to the recording of the album Du temps & de l’instant, a programme the Savalls went on to perform in concerts all over the world.
Since 2005 he has worked with the Indian dancer and choreographer Shantala Shivalingappa on various projects alongside musicians such as Chitravina N. Ravikiran, Thodur Madabusi Krishna, Subash Chandra, Prabhou Edouard, Wassim Soubra and others.
In 2008 he recorded Mireu el nostre mar with the collaboration of Mario Mas, featuring Jordi Gaspar, Javier Mas and Dimitris Psonis, among others. The album was enthusiastically received in France, where he has performed in a trio with Mario Mas and Jordi Gaspar. He has also worked with artists such as Driss El Maloumi, Nedyalko Nedyalkov, Razmik Amyan, Gaguik Mouradian and Hakan Güngör, with whom he performed in Turkey in 2014 along with Grup Pandora for TRT Muzik. He has also collaborated with Jordi Gaspar on the projects Gemini and the poetry performance Una música de cavalls negres as well as participating in Clara Peya’s projects Espiral and Mímulus.
In 2014 he unveiled his most recent project, IMPRO, with the collaboration of other musicians including Pedro Estevan, Jordi Gaspar, Driss El Maloumi, Hakan Güngör, David Mayoral and Nedyalko Nedyalkov. In 2014 he also adapted with Shantala Shivalingappa the IMPRO project to the medium of dance, resulting in Impro Sharana, which was performed at the Festival Temporada Alta (Girona) and Mercat de les Flors (Barcelona).
During 2015 he has given concerts with contemporary Catalan musicians such as the singer-songwriter Judit Neddermann and the composer and pianist Clara Peya, performing new versions of his IMPRO project and concept.
In 2016 Ferran has devoted his energies to new projects and original creations.
